You're Probably Wearing Perfume Wrong
Here's How to Fix It
Share
A beautiful perfume shouldn't disappear within an hour. The secret isn't always buying a stronger fragrance - it's knowing how to wear it.
Whether you're wearing a light daytime scent or something rich and decadent like Buttered Sunshine, these simple tips will help your fragrance last longer, project beautifully, and become part of your story.
1. Start With Moisturised Skin
The biggest mistake people make is spraying perfume onto dry skin.
Fragrance molecules need something to cling to. When your skin is moisturised with a body lotion, body butter, or body oil, your perfume has a better surface to hold onto, allowing it to evaporate more slowly throughout the day.
Think of moisturised skin as a sponge and dry skin as sand. One holds onto fragrance beautifully; the other lets it disappear far too quickly.
2. Spray Your Pulse Points
This one is a classic for good reason - but there’s more happening here than most people realise.
Your pulse points are areas where your body naturally generates heat, and that heat helps your perfume evolve, diffuse, and come alive on the skin.
Apply perfume to areas such as:
- Wrists (33°C / 91°F)
- Neck (35°C / 96°F)
- Behind your ears (34°C / 94°F)
- Inside your elbows (34°C / 93°F)
- Behind your knees (34°C / 93°F)
Each of these zones carries a slightly different temperature, which subtly changes how your fragrance performs. Warmer areas like the neck create a stronger, faster projection, while cooler points like the wrists allow the scent to unfold more slowly and last longer.
Together, they create movement - your perfume doesn’t just sit on the skin, it shifts with you throughout the day.
These warm points gently diffuse your fragrance over time, helping it bloom in layers instead of all at once.
Golden Rule - Never rub your wrists. Friction creates heat, heat breaks the structure, and the fragrance loses its story before it has a chance to unfold. Instead, gently dab your wrists together or press the scent into the skin to preserve its full life.
3. Don't Forget Your Hair
Hair is one of the best places to carry fragrance.
If you have longer hair, lift it and lightly mist underneath. As your hair moves throughout the day, it creates a soft scent cloud around you. Days later, you'll still catch little whispers of your perfume every time you turn your head, and so will the people around you.
If your hair tends to be dry, spray your hair cream or leave-in conditioner instead of spraying directly onto your hair.
4. Your Clothes Can Hold Fragrance for Days
Fabric often holds perfume even longer than skin.
Instead of spraying randomly, gather your clothing into the centre - bring the sleeves, neckline and hem together - and spray into the middle. As the fabric unfolds, the fragrance disperses throughout the garment without needing multiple sprays.
Scarves, jackets and knitwear are especially wonderful at holding and wafting around scent.
5. Dab Instead of Spray
Not everyone enjoys a fine mist.
Many perfume bottles can also be used by dabbing a small amount directly onto your pulse points. It wastes less fragrance and gives you more control over application.
With Buttered Sunshine, you can carefully unscrew the top and use the bottle as a dabber if you prefer.
You can even mix a tiny drop into your favourite unscented body lotion or hair cream to create your own scented body ritual.
6. Create a Scent Memory
This might be my favourite perfume tip of all.
Perfume isn't just something you wear - it's something you remember.
Whenever I travel, I take one fragrance with me and make it the scent of that holiday. Before I leave for the trip, I lightly perfume my outfits, spray the inside of my suitcase, and mist my scarves.
Weeks or even months later, one spray instantly transports me back.
Back to the beach.
Back to the sunset.
Back to the city shopping.
Back to the laughter.
That's the magic of scent. It weaves itself into your memories more powerfully than almost anything else.
Instead of choosing a different perfume every day, try making one fragrance the soundtrack to a special season of your life.
The Sage & Lune Philosophy
At Sage & Lune, we believe fragrance is about so much more than smelling good.
It's about slowing down. Creating rituals. Making memories.
Finding comfort in familiar notes.
And wearing your fragrance with confidence.
Perfume should be discovered, not apologised for. Of course, there is a balance - you never want to overwhelm a room. But you also don't have to shrink yourself because you're worried someone might notice your fragrance.
Wear the perfume you love.
Wear enough that you catch little moments of it throughout the day.
Leave behind a beautiful impression.
Because a wonderful fragrance doesn't just smell beautiful - it becomes part of how people remember you.
Years from now, one little spritz has the power to transport you back to a moment you thought you'd forgotten.
And that, to us, is the true magic of perfume.
