Your Skin, Heat and How Perfume Lives on Your Skin

It all starts with heat!

Your Skin, Heat and How Perfume Lives on Your Skin

Most people think perfume is simple - spray and go.

But fragrance is actually alive on the skin. It reacts to heat, movement, and time. And once you understand that different parts of your body carry different temperatures, you stop wearing perfume randomly… and start wearing it intentionally.

This is the Pulse Point Method.

A way of applying fragrance that doesn’t just make it last longer - but allows it to unfold in layers, shift throughout the day, and tell a full scent story from first impression to final whisper.

Your Skin Isn’t One Temperature

One of the biggest myths in perfume is that all pulse points are the same. They’re not. Your body has micro-climates - small heat zones that change how fragrance behaves.

Higher heat = faster diffusion (stronger opening, shorter lifespan of top notes)

Lower heat = slower diffusion (softer opening, longer scent development)

Once you understand this, you can decide what kind of perfume experience you want.

Do you want impact? Intimacy? Longevity? A scent that evolves slowly like a story - or one that arrives like a statement?

It all starts with heat.

The Pulse Points & Their Temperatures

Think of your body as a map of fragrance behaviour:

  • Neck (35°C / 96°F) – The Accelerator
  • Behind the ears (34°C / 94°F) – The Soft Bloom Zone
  • Inner elbows (34°C / 93°F) – The Slow Release Point
  • Behind the knees (34°C / 93°F) – The Hidden Diffuser
  • Inner wrists (33°C / 91°F) – The Time Keeper

Each one changes how your perfume develops.

The Neck: The Accelerator

This is your most expressive zone. The fragrance rises quickly and projects strongly. Top notes - especially citrus, green, and airy accords - burst open immediately.

But there’s a trade-off: what you gain in impact, you lose in longevity of the opening.

This is the place for presence. For first impressions. For when you want your fragrance to enter a room before you do.

Behind the Ears: The Soft Bloom Zone

This area creates a gentle diffusion. It’s intimate. Close. Almost like the fragrance is speaking directly to people near you rather than the whole room.

Top notes linger slightly longer here, while the heart of the perfume begins to emerge smoothly and naturally.

Inner Elbows: The Slow Release Point

Less exposed to air and movement, this is where fragrance deepens rather than announces itself.

It unfolds gradually into the heart notes - florals, spices, warmth - without rushing the experience.

Think of this as your “all-day story layer.”

Behind the Knees: The Hidden Diffuser

This is one of the most underrated pulse points. Because it’s lower on the body, warmth rises slowly, creating a subtle trail as you move. It doesn’t shout - it lingers.

Perfect for creating a scent that follows you quietly rather than leading you loudly.

Inner Wrists: The Time Keeper

This is the coolest pulse point on the list - and one of the most important. Here, fragrance develops in its most structured form. Top notes stay clearer for longer, and the perfume unfolds in a more linear, true-to-formula way.

This is where longevity lives.

Never rub your wrists. Friction creates heat, heat destroys structure, and the fragrance loses its story before it has a chance to unfold. Instead, gently dab your wrists together or press the scent softly into your skin to preserve its full life.

Dab. Press. Don’t Waste the Story.

How you apply matters just as much as where. Instead of rubbing or spraying carelessly, try:

  • Dabbing: lightly press the fragrance into the skin
  • Pressing: touch pulse points together gently
  • Layering into moisturiser: to slow evaporation and extend longevity

This protects the molecular structure of the fragrance so it can evolve naturally, rather than breaking apart too quickly.

How to Layer Your Scent Across the Body

Once you understand heat zones, you can start building a full fragrance experience instead of a single moment.

Try this:

  • Neck = impact & opening
  • Behind ears = intimacy
  • Inner elbows = depth
  • Wrists = longevity
  • Behind knees = trailing scent as you move

This creates a multi-layered scent trail - not one flat note, but a living fragrance that evolves as you do.

Where (and when) to Reapply

Reapplication isn’t failure - it’s strategy.

  • Reapply to wrists if you want to restart the full scent journey
  • Reapply to neck if you want to refresh projection and presence
  • Reapply to inner elbows if you want to deepen the heart notes later in the day

Think of it less like “top-up perfume” and more like adjusting the mood.

Two Ways People Experience Perfume

There is no one way to wear fragrance.

Some people want:

  • A long, slow burn
  • A scent that stays close and intimate
  • Something that unfolds throughout the entire day

Others want:

  • A quick burst of emotion
  • A strong opening
  • A scent that feels like adrenaline and presence

The beauty of understanding pulse points is that you can choose both - depending on how you place your fragrance.

It also depends on the way the fragrance is built and that's why I created Buttered Sunshine, so you don't have to compromise. I wanted the brightness, warmth and depth to coexist - so the fragrance could live with you throughout the day. That little moment when you lift your wrist towards your face at night and realise it’s still there

The Real Magic

Perfume isn’t just what you wear. It’s how it moves through your body. How it reacts to your warmth. How it lingers in your clothes. How it becomes part of your memory without asking permission. Once you learn the language of heat, you stop applying perfume blindly…

And start composing it.

Like a story. Like a ritual. Like a second skin.
