Cocoa Tea the Trini Way
Or at least… my mom’s way?

If you grew up in a Trini home, you know about cocoa tea. Not the powdered stuff—real cocoa. What’s now called “ceremonial cacao” has always been in our kitchens. Every family made it a little differently. This version is my mom’s… with my little twist.
I’ve started making it more intentionally over the years—less sugar, more presence. It’s now one of my favourite ways to ground myself. Whether I’m in the mood for something rich and sweet, or calming and bittersweet, cocoa tea meets me where I am.
What You’ll Need (for 2 cups):
- 16g raw cocoa or ceremonial cacao (adjust to your taste)
 - 1 cup water
 - 1 cup milk (any kind you like)
 - 10–20g sugar (or more based on your mood!)
 - Optional spices: bay leaf, orange peel, nutmeg, clove

How to Make It:
Simmer 1 cup water with your choice of spices (bay leaf and orange peel are my favorites; nutmeg and clove add extra coziness). After 2 minutes, add chopped cocoa and stir gently over low heat. Once melted, pour in 1 cup milk and your preferred sugar (10g for mellow, 20g for dessert). Stir and gently heat through, whisking or frothing if desired. Straining is optional—I skip it now to keep the fiber and gut benefits.
Mindful Eating Notes:
This isn’t just a warm drink—it’s a ritual. A way to slow down, nourish, and connect.
Raw Cocoa / Ceremonial Cacao: Rich in antioxidants, natural healthy fats (like cocoa butter), and theobromine—a gentle, heart-opening stimulant that supports detox, circulation, and calm mental clarity.
Spices: Not just flavour—they offer mood-lifting, anti-inflammatory, and digestive benefits. Orange and clove are especially comforting and grounding.
Milk: Adds protein and fat to help balance blood sugar and keep you fuller longer. Use what feels good in your body.
Fibre: Found in the cocoa residue—great for gut health, regularity, and natural detox.
Sugar: It’s not the enemy. Use what you need, skip what you don’t. Honour your cravings and your well-being. Both matter.
Cocoa tea is a hug in a mug. It’s not just a drink—it’s culture, comfort, and care. However you make it, make it yours. With presence. With peace. With joy.
